Early morning

Just got up, having a big cup of coffee waiting for the anatomy test to begin. Trying to manage a new blog application on my phone, dunno if this post is gonna end up all messy. Ok, I'm off, later...

Anatomy Test number 1

Should do some revision but to be honest I don’t feel like doing it. Just came home from Paymon’s place where we’ve been revising for a good hour and a half which feels great.

I hope, and believe, that we’ll be able to nail the test tomorrow since we’ve been revising so much and it feels like I know things thoroughly.
The first anatomy test basically covers the upper extremity divided into the hand, the forearm, the upper arm and the shoulder girdle. We have to know the names of the bones, the different parts of the bones as well as the joints. Furthermore we also need to know about the general anatomy of the bone and joint, such as how the bone develops, what it consists of and how the joints work.

The general anatomy of the bone is rather complex, these names won’t mean much to you but I’ll still namedrop the different subcategories.
Microanatomy of bone; bone classification, bone structure, bone tissue (osteocytes/clasts/blasts, chondrocytes), growth of bone (ossification and osteogenesis) nutrition of the bone, body planes, axis and medical orientation in 3D space as well as basic muscle, tendon and nerve attachment knowledge. It looks like a lot for one and a half week but once you grind it down into smaller parts it’s doable.
All together I’d estimate it to about a hundred terms, or even more – after all we’ll cover 64 bones out of the 208 in the human body.

Even if anatomy takes up a lot of my time right now I can’t forget about the other subjects; histology, biophysics and of course we have Czech. The Czech classes are really funny yet tough – Czech is a difficult language. Today we learned the numbers, yay(!)

PhotobucketTomorrow night, after the test, I’ll mainly focus on histology, the other big subject during the first semester. It’s probably also the most interesting one – I’m like a little kid again while looking through the microscope, as if I explored my back yard garden. There’re so many things to see and discover in the microscope that you’ve only seen in the book. Of course anatomy is interesting, especially when it comes to physiology, but namedropping is rather monotonously.

Now I’m off to relax my head with some Call of Duty: MW2 and an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I hope it goes well tomorrow, wish me luck...

New exterior

As you can see the Journal got a face lift. I've added a neat logotype to the tab and address bar, made the post bar even wider - mainly to increase the quality of my photos as well as added a little more colour. Hope you'll like it.

It's after 1:30am, I need to sleep so off I go, cheers...

Fainting in class; |X|check

Today there was lot of drama.
It all went well until the biophysics lecture.
When I walked down the stairs to the lecture hall I remember thinking “gosh the air in here is really bad” and it wouldn’t take long until my presumption would knock me in the head.
I felt a distant unease during the whole lecture, had problems concentrating and the bad air didn’t make things better.

Towards the end I got really bad and started to feel like throwing up. I broke out in a cold sweat and turned to my colleges to my right (four of them) and told them that “I really need to go out”. Obviously my friend to the right, Marketa (who was trying to concentrate on the lecture), I can believe surprisingly found herself encountering nothing but a pale face with bluish lips mumbling some gibberish. What a wreck.
After that it all happened in a matter of seconds: The four people on my row went up and I staggered towards the stairs to get out of there to either get water or more importantly fresh air.

By now my hearing was almost gone and my sight was really blurry and as if that wasn’t enough my legs didn’t want to obey me. I tried hard to get up the stairs but my feet felt like rocks and I collapsed to the staircase. I had my reflexes left though, and was able to counter it. I still made quite a ruckus forcing myself up the stairs and I felt the attention switching from the tutor towards me (if that was the case I don’t know, I just remember the feeling of it).

As I got out in the fresh air it didn’t take long for my senses to get back on track but I was still shaking from the cold sweating. One of my colleges and friends from the row, Thomas, came out to check on me and five minutes after that the others came out as the lecture was finished. I had a chance to tell them what happened. The rest of the day I had a major headache and during the night a bad fever.

The worst part is that I still don’t know what triggered it – the best part is that in a couple of years from now on I’ll most probably have the knowledge to explain it...

Geared up for practice

A new week - new knowledge to take in. Still without books in the major subjects; anatomy, histology/cytology and biophysics, I went to the bookshop to gear up. Believe me when I say it; it’s pretty hard to chose what books to buy. Each subject has at least three represented books, atlases or practice booklets and every person – students, teachers and the personal in the book store – recommend different books. After trying to listen to them all to see which one seemed to be the most popular one I pretty much shut my ears off and just went with the one that I liked the most picture- and text-wise.
It’s rather expensive too, even if the currency brings down the price just a bit and each book isn’t worth a fortune individually it still sums up to a rather big expense, and this is just for the first semester.

It’s amazing how fast the books went out of stock at the book stores. I mean c’mon, didn’t you plan for a new autumn semester with one of the greatest number of freshers’ so far? (btw, that was just an assumption)

At least I feel pretty good about my equipment, especially since I bought my lab coat, forceps and scalpel just the other day...

Caroline arrived this Friday and she stayed until Wednesday. I've been able to show her Prague and how I live as well as introduced her to my roomies and friends. We had a good time, as well as a bad time but that’s not part of the story.
